We're going coco nuts!

We can't believe how many benefits coconut oil has for your pet - talk about multi-purpose! By giving them some every day or just occasionally you may quickly see improvements in their overall health. It’s an easy source of energy, it may improve their fur and any irritations...

With this warm weather, coconut oil can be another great option to help against ticks and insects (for this, just apply the oil to the legs, abdomen, and back, head and neck every two days). Likewise, if your dog has dry skin; just apply some coconut oil to soothe and calm. All you have to do is apply the coconut oil to the irritated areas such as paws, their belly and so on...after a few days, you should see decent improvements.

It can also promote a healthy, shiny and soft coat for your pet. It can be applied topically (to the outside coat) or incorporated into their diet.

Another bonus is that coconut oil smells fantastic - thus so will your dog’s breath when digesting it! This is because it's been said that coconut oil aids digestion and should alleviate minor digestive problems. In fact, you can supplement the diet with coconut oil for supplementary use during worm infestations. For this, we recommend 1 teaspoon per 10 kg of animal body weight over a week period. Pause for a week, and then repeat for another week.

Another great way to use coconut oil is in dog and cat ice cream!
Here's Filipa's easy and go-to ice cream recipe:

Pet Ice Cream

- coconut oil

- blueberries

- ice cube tray

- Water

- (1 teaspoon of peanut butter: Must be one that's 100% peanuts, with no sugar or xylitol)

Firstly add two teaspoons of coconut oil, then 1-2 blueberries into each ice cube portion. You can also add a teaspoon of peanut butter as a treat and it helps boosts their interest, but this is only an option and only on occasions. Then, fill up the remaining space with water. Lastly, just freeze for about 10-12 hours, and that's it! Healthy, refreshing and so sweet!

Please note: that this is a treat, we recommend one cube at a time, to be given in moderation on hot days to refresh. If possible the size of the cube should be relevant to the size of your dog, i.e. if the dog eats the whole cube at one time it is advisable to increase the size so that it only licks at the cube, thus is consumed slowly. Every dog is different so please take this into consideration and ensure your dog is ok before using as a treat again.

Here are Filipa's thoughts about coconut oil:

"Coconut oil is amazing in any season, but truth to be told, my dogs just love the coconut ice-cream I make for them on Summer days. The best coconut oil is free from artificial additives and industrial processing, that’s why I use the Aniforte one!" - Filipa Santiago

Stay cool out there; and send us your images if you make Filipa's pet ice cream!
