We are often asked about the sustainability of our Moor Mud, and it’s a concern for us too!
When people hear the word "peat," it often raises environmental concerns — and for good reason. Traditional peat extraction, especially for potting soil, can be extremely harmful to natural moorlands. But we want to make one thing very clear: our process of harvesting natural Moor Mud is fundamentally different.
Peat for Potting Soil vs. Natural Moor Mud
The conventional extraction of peat involves draining the moorland, a disruptive process that can alter the ecosystem dramatically and take decades to repair. This approach is rightly criticised for its impact on the environment.
However, this is not how our Moor Mud is sourced. In fact, it's the exact opposite.
Preserving the Integrity of the Moor
Natural Moor Mud, used for wellness treatments both internally and externally, relies on the moor remaining in its original wet, muddy state. To maintain this delicate balance, our extraction process is designed with nature at the forefront.
Here’s how it works:
- First, the upper layer of the moor is carefully removed and preserved.
- A small amount of the mud beneath is then gently collected.
- The top layer is immediately replaced, allowing the moor to begin its natural recovery.
- The area is then left untouched for years, giving it time to regenerate without interference.
This slow and respectful method ensures the ecosystem is not robbed of its richness. We extract only what we need, and only in a way that lets nature continue to thrive.
Protected by Law — And by Us
The moorlands in Germany, where our Moor Mud comes from, are under strict environmental protection laws — and we fully support that. Sustainability is not just a legal requirement for us — it’s a core value.
By using our Moor Mud, you're not only choosing a powerful natural remedy — you're also supporting a process that respects and protects one of nature’s most unique landscapes.
