Heat in female dogs – her natural cycle

Being in season (also known as heat or oestrus) is part of a dog’s reproductive cycle and will continue throughout her life – dogs do not go through menopause like humans.

Most female dogs come into season twice a year, though this can vary depending on the breed, size, and individual factors. During this time, your dog is fertile and can become pregnant.

Please note: A young female’s first season may be irregular as her hormones settle. Bleeding might be heavier, or signs may be less noticeable – and in some cases, there may even be a ‘silent season’.

The canine cycle explained:

  • Proestrus (pre-heat): Lasts around 3–17 days. The vulva swells and you may notice bloody discharge. Your dog is not yet fertile but may attract males. Her behaviour can vary – some females avoid males or show disinterest.
  • Oestrus (heat): The fertile phase, usually lasting up to 9 days. Discharge becomes lighter, and your dog may lift her tail to the side, showing readiness to mate. Multiple eggs are released during this time. Keep your dog close and supervised.
  • Metoestrus (post-heat): Can last up to 90 days. Swelling goes down, discharge stops. Hormonal changes occur whether or not pregnancy happens. Progesterone levels remain high at first, which may lead to symptoms of a false pregnancy.
  • Anoestrus (resting phase): This hormonally quiet phase can last several months, and is when no mating or pregnancy can occur.

Signs of heat can vary between dogs but may include:

  • More frequent urination – often in small amounts, like marking
  • Changed posture – some females may lift a leg when urinating
  • More interest in male dogs – they may seek attention or present themselves more
  • Behavioural changes – from clingy and cuddly to moody, nervous or withdrawn
  • Increased need for affection – many females become more needy and seek attention
  • Restlessness or withdrawal – some change resting spots often, others hide away
  • Reduced obedience – they may ignore commands and wander further
  • Sleepiness or restlessness – either more tired than usual or overly alert
  • Loss of appetite – often overlooked, but many females eat less during this time

False pregnancy in dogs

Also called pseudopregnancy, this is not a disease but a normal hormonal response that can occur 4–9 weeks after heat. Affected females may behave as if pregnant – nesting, guarding toys, becoming clingy, irritable, or withdrawn. Some may even show physical signs like milk production.

This behaviour has roots in evolution: in wolf packs, only the alpha female has pups, but others help raise them. False pregnancy allows these helpers to produce milk and care for the pups, ensuring their survival. Dogs living together today still often sync their cycles – a throwback to pack life.

False pregnancies usually pass within 2–3 weeks once hormones settle, but sometimes symptoms last up to 8 weeks. This can be a challenging time for both dog and owner.

Gentle support for more well-being and happiness

We can help you can support your dog naturally during this time. Traditional herbs can help balance hormones and ease symptoms gently.

  • Daily walks, play and mental stimulation help redirect focus
  • Remove toys she treats like puppies
  • A calm routine can help her find balance again

Herbal support for hormonal balance - The ingredients and their purpose

Agnus castus – Natural hormone support
Agnus castus (chaste tree) is known to help balance hormone levels. It affects the pituitary gland, which controls many hormones including prolactin – often involved in false pregnancies. By regulating prolactin, agnus castus may ease hormonal discomforts.

Angelica – A gift from nature
Known as angel’s root, angelica has calming and hormone-supporting properties. It contains essential oils and phytohormones that may help ease imbalances, reduce stress and support a relaxed nervous system – ideal during sensitive times.

Raspberry leaves – Gentle but effective
Traditionally used to support uterine health, raspberry leaves can help regulate cycles, ease cramps and promote balance. They are rich in flavonoids and tannins that may also support the liver and digestive system.

Lemon balm & passionflower – For calm and rest
These herbs are known for their relaxing effects on the nervous system. They may help reduce stress, nervousness and restlessness – perfect for dogs feeling unsettled during hormonal changes.

Siberian ginseng – Resilience for your dog
Also called eleuthero, this adaptogen helps the body handle stress and maintain energy. It can support emotional balance, boost immunity, and aid recovery – especially useful in times of hormonal strain.

AniForte® Hormone Balance blends together these carefully chosen herbs. Ideal as a daily supplement, it gently supports your female dog during times of hormonal imbalance, heat or false pregnancy.
